Dragon Boat Festival 2026: Shangri-La’s Dragonbeat Elevates Sport into a Cultural, Fitness and Beachside Festival

Hong Kong’s dragon boat scene has long been defined by intensity, heritage and team spirit. In 2026, Shangri-La Group introduces Dragonbeat: a new festival concept that reimagines the traditional Dragon Boat Festival through a contemporary lifestyle lens.

Taking place on 19 June 2026 at Stanley Main Beach, Dragonbeat is anchored by the Shangri-La Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships and expands the experience into a full-day cultural and social destination. from the iconic races, to the four-metre-tall inflatable dragon landmark, the Shangri-La Taste of Hong Kong Food Fair to a first-of-its-kind Dragonbeat After Party on the sand—all delivered through Shangri-La’s signature Asian hospitality. To further amplify the festival’s energy, the Group has appointed Eileen Gu, Olympic gold medallist and the most decorated freestyle skier in Olympic history, as Shangri-La Dragonbeat Ambassador.

A Sporting Highlight with Global Appeal

At its core, the Stanley Championships remain one of Hong Kong’s most iconic dragon boat events, attracting over 180 teams and thousands of athletes. For local paddlers and competitive crews, it is both a test of endurance and a celebration of teamwork—values deeply embedded in the sport.

Set against Stanley’s open waters, the race environment demands both power and precision, resonating strongly with Hong Kong’s growing hybrid fitness culture, where functional training and team-based competition continue to gain traction.

From Race Energy to Sunset Beats

As the races conclude, Dragonbeat transitions into a first-of-its-kind beachside After Party, extending the festival into golden hour and early evening. Set along Stanley Main Beach, the programme features a curated line-up of DJs shaping Hong Kong’s contemporary music scene. Together, they are creating a new way to experience the Dragon Boat Festival in Stanley and extending the festival energy from morning through sunset and into the early evening.

Beyond the Race: Food, Culture and Community

Expanding beyond the competition, Dragonbeat introduces the Shangri-La Taste of Hong Kong Food Fair, a curated culinary experience showcasing local favourites alongside international flavours. Located at the Hong Kong Sea School Football Court, the food fair invites visitors to explore the diversity of Hong Kong’s dining scene in one vibrant setting.

A curated food zone spotlighting local flavours, international delights and refreshing sips, crafted

by Shangri-La’s culinary teams in collaboration with local heroes, inviting guests to explore a

cross-section of Hong Kong’s dining scene in one place.

A Striking Visual Landmark

Adding to the atmosphere, a four-metre-tall inflatable dragon installation will take centre stage at Stanley Main Beach. One of the largest of its kind in Hong Kong, the landmark serves as both a symbolic tribute to the festival and a visually striking focal point.

As day turns to night, the installation transforms into an illuminated feature, casting a surreal glow across the shoreline and bridging the transition from daytime races to evening festivities—while offering a highly shareable moment for visitors and content creators alike.

A Festival with a Conscious Footprint

Beyond its cultural and entertainment offerings, Dragonbeat also reflects a growing emphasis on sustainability within Hong Kong’s event landscape. Water refilling stations will be available on-site, encouraging paddlers and visitors to bring reusable bottles and reduce reliance on single-use plastics.

This initiative aligns with a broader industry shift towards more responsible event practices—an increasingly important consideration for both organisers and attendees.

Creative Collaborations: Turning Tradition into Contemporary Culture

Dragonbeat is brought to life through collaborations with Hong Kong’s local creative community, including Hong Kong artist Jim Lee and Grocery, a Hong Kong-based fashion and lifestyle brand. Jim Lee designed the Dragonbeat logo, reinterpreting the traditional dragon with bold ink strokes that convey vitality, strength and auspiciousness; his artwork also extends to 12 dragon boats through race-day decals, turning the waters off Stanley Main Beach into a moving open-air art gallery.

Produced with Grocery, a limited-edition Dragonbeat Capsule Collection featuring a washed heavyweight T-shirt and a tote bag carries the spirit of the festival beyond the racecourse and into everyday wear.
